Route 3 — The People Behind the War: from the Central Market to the Tobacco Factory

Some wars are told through battles and front lines. This route tells a different story: that of those who remained in the city, in the rearguard. Mothers working in the factory while planes flew over the rooftops. Children who lived with bombings as if they were just another part of the landscape. Neighbours who built shelters with their own hands to protect themselves and their families. Route 3 puts a human face on the Spanish Civil War in Alicante.

The route begins in 25 May Square, next to the memorial that commemorates one of the most devastating episodes experienced in Alicante: the bombing of the Central Market on 25 May 1938.

From this point, we will walk through significant areas of the city, such as Spain Square, the King’s Hospital, and the Quijano Pantheon, contextualising the impact on different facets of Alicante’s society, leading us to the shelter in Castellón Square.

In Castellón Square, we will learn about the history of the Carolinas neighbourhood, deeply connected to Alicante’s culture, community participation, and the city’s working‑class identity.

Inside Shelter R36, we will be surprised by its unique construction process. Thanks to its musealisation, we will also explore the importance of water throughout the centuries in the history of Alicante.

Access to R36 involves stairs. It is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.

We will then continue the visit through the facilities of the Tobacco Factory and the Casa de Misericordia, spaces that played a crucial role in the history of Alicante.

Shelter R69 marks the end of this route. Built specifically for the staff of the Tobacco Factory, its structure and organisation differ from other shelters in the city, offering insight into alternative forms of collective protection.

Inside, visitors can watch an audiovisual piece that helps contextualise the historical events explained during the visit, complemented by a collection of historical photographs showing Alicante in the early 20th century.
