Discover the history of the defensive network that protected the Huerta de Alicante
The Torre de Sarrió opens its doors to invite you to discover one of Alicante’s most unique heritage sites. On a guided tour, you’ll explore the Torres de la Huerta Interpretation Centre and learn how, almost five centuries ago, the inhabitants of this region organised an extraordinary defence network against pirate raids from North Africa.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Huerta de Alicante was one of the most prosperous agricultural areas in the Mediterranean. Its wealth, based mainly on vine cultivation and the production of Alicante’s prestigious wine, made this area a target for constant attacks. To protect the population and their property, a network of private defensive towers emerged, each visible to the others and linked by a warning system that saved countless lives.
The Torre de Sarrió is one of the best-preserved examples of this defensive system and, following its restoration, houses the Torres de la Huerta Interpretation Centre, which explains the historical, social and architectural evolution of this extraordinary heritage site, declared a Site of Cultural Interest.
Throughout the tour, we will learn about the history of the great pirate raids led by Barbarossa, Dragut and Hasan Aga; discover how the warning network between the towers operated; and analyse the main defensive features of the Torre de Sarrió itself, a true symbol of the historical heritage of the Huerta de Alicante.
An unmissable experience for understanding the history of Alicante from a different perspective, combining heritage, landscape and history.
